Black and white photograph of four men riding and operating some automated machinery which is funneling ice into train cars.
Description
From note with photograph - This photograph shows one of the automatic icing devices put into use at the P. F. E. Ice Decks in Roseville, California during the 1950s. From the early days of the artificial ice making plant, the Roseville Ice Decks employed literally thousands of men around the clock. In the 1950s, much of the ice making was automated using labor-saving machinery as is shown in this photograph. Later, self-refrigerated railroad cars excluded the need for ice. During the summer of 1974, all the ice decks were torn down.
